Older streets usually put the washer and dryer against an exterior wall: a short, fairly straight run that is easy to service, though it often still carries the original transition hose behind the machine. Later townhome product tends to move laundry inland — a closet off a hallway, a stacked unit under a stair, an upstairs alcove. Those runs turn corners, and every corner is a place where lint slows down and settles.
Neither layout is a problem by itself. What matters is that the pathway gets measured and cleared end to end instead of vacuumed a few feet in from the hood.
Side-Wall Terminations and What Grows In Front of Them

That is good news for access — the exterior hood can usually be reached from the ground or a short ladder. It also means the hood sits at a height where the rest of the yard eventually reaches it. Hedges fill in. Mulch beds get topped up season after season until they are level with the louvers. A privacy fence goes in a few feet off the wall and the discharge has nowhere to travel.
Damper flaps are the other recurring find. The louvered hoods used across most of these communities stiffen in the Florida sun and stop swinging freely, so exhaust has to fight the flap on every cycle. When a hood will not open the way it should, we photograph it and tell you, rather than guessing at the cause from inside the house.
If a normal load needs two cycles to finish, or the laundry closet feels warm and damp while the machine runs, the restriction is often in that last stretch of wall — which is exactly what blockage removal is for when brushing alone will not clear it.

A house built in the late 1980s is on its second or third HVAC system by now, and the supply trunk generally stayed put while the equipment changed around it. My Greenacres townhome has the dryer in an interior closet. Where does the vent actually run?
In most townhome and villa layouts here, an interior laundry closet is ducted sideways — through a soffit, a chase, or the joist space — until it reaches the nearest exterior wall and exits through a side-wall hood. That means bends, and bends are where lint slows down. We measure the run before we start so we know how long it is and where it turns, then clean the full accessible length instead of the first few feet.
Hedges and mulch have grown up around our side-wall vent hood. Does that matter?
It can. Side-wall terminations in Greenacres often sit low enough that shrubs, a topped-up mulch bed, or a privacy fence ends up directly in front of the louvers. Exhaust needs somewhere to go, and a crowded hood pushes resistance back down the run. We check the clearance while we are outside and tell you if trimming or regrading would help.
