Room-by-Room: A South Florida Home Fire-Safety Checklist

Most house fires don't start with something dramatic. They start with the ordinary stuff β€” a lint-packed vent, an overloaded outlet, a space heater too close to a curtain. Here's a quick, no-tools-required walkthrough you can do this weekend.

Laundry Room

Check your dryer vent cover on the outside of the house β€” if the flap won't open freely or you see lint around the edges, that's a red flag. Inside, clean the lint trap before every load, not just when you remember. If your dryer takes more than one cycle to fully dry a load, don't ignore it.

Kitchen

Keep anything flammable β€” towels, paper towels, oven mitts β€” at least a few inches from the stovetop. Check that your range hood vent isn't caked in grease, and never leave cooking unattended, even "just for a minute."

Garage & Utility Areas

Make sure your water heater and any gas appliances have clear space around them β€” no stacked boxes, no stored chemicals pressed up against the unit. If you keep a generator, gas cans, or propane tanks in the garage, store them away from any ignition source.

Attic & Ductwork

This is the one most homeowners skip, because you simply can't see it without opening the system up. Dust and debris buildup inside air ducts and around HVAC equipment is a real but often invisible fire risk, especially in older South Florida homes with original ductwork.

Bedrooms & Living Areas

Test smoke detectors monthly and swap batteries at least once a year. Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything flammable, and never run extension cords under rugs or furniture.

If you can only do one thing off this list this month, check your dryer vent. It's the single most common fire risk we find in South Florida homes β€” and the easiest to fix.

When to Call a Professional

The laundry room and attic items on this list are the two spots a DIY check can only tell you so much β€” a clogged dryer vent or dusty duct system usually needs a real inspection to know for sure. That's exactly what our free airflow & safety check covers, whether you're in Boynton Beach or anywhere else across our South Florida service area.
